The article examines the personality and work of the poet Nicolae Labiş, highlighting his formative years in Bukovina, his precocious literary talent, and his emergence within the Romanian literary landscape of the 1950s. A central place is given to the poem "Moartea căprioarei" (The Death of the Doe), interpreted as an expression of the loss of innocence and the confrontation with the harsh realities of existence. The article also discusses the poet's independent spirit, the fraught relationship between Labiş and the political and cultural climate of the 1950s, his untimely death in 1956, and the questions surrounding the circumstances of that event. Although the poet was initially aligned with the era's official ideology, the authors emphasize his independent spirit and his yearning for intellectual freedom. Labiş is portrayed neither as a mere "poet of communism" nor as a politicized hero viewed in retrospect, but rather as a complex young man dedicated to establishing his own poetic voice. Finally, the article underscores the significance of the manuscripts and the "Nicolae Labiş" collection held at the "Ştefan cel Mare" University Library in Suceava for the preservation and study of his literary legacy.
